Pink Paintings

An exploration of painting in relation to the representation of female bodies.

I wanted to explore the meaning behind the tradition of representing bodies through paint; seemingly the elemental form of human artwork. By first photographing my body through extremely tight shots, I isolated the formal qualities of the body. I wanted to elevate these forms; to construct a meaning that is contextualized through historical depictions of women in art. I decided to use paint because it seems default; without agenda, while also recalling historical notions of art. I depicted these forms through paint as an alternate form of perceiving women; only mere suggestions of human form. During in class critique my peers remarked on a resemblance to biological models; blood cells and veins. I really enjoyed working with this micro understanding of body and femininity, and would love to explore the subject more.
