As part of the editorial team for UJAH; UBC's Undergraduate Journal of Art History and Visual Culture, I was involved in the jury process as well as editing a paper from one of our student authors.
The jury process was a valuable experience in working with my peers and having the power to platform undergraduate student voices and promote them in the academic world. We selected papers from an open call for all UBC Undergraduate students, and focused on those using Art History and Visual Culture as a way to uplift marginalized voices and ideas. This process was long and thorough as the editorial team was a group of highly passionate students, but was rewarding as the final selection came to be.
I was assigned a paper to edit along with another editor, which involved three rounds of edits and collaboration between us and the author. This process was largely remote, and really improved my communication skills; clear deadlines and guidelines were so helpful when set early on. By editing for clarity and a strong voice from the author, I feel that we achieved a powerful final product and built strong relationships as a team. The paper is titled "From Propaganda to Paralympics: Images of Disability as a Matter of Othering" by Yasmine Semeniuk and will be available on the UJAH website when it is published digitally.
